New M.B.A. Gets New Resume
New M.B.A. Gets New ResumeNew M.B.A. Gets New ResumeAfter receiving her masters degree, Roe Polczynski needed help graduating her mid-level resume to an executive-level spotlight. Its simple math Smaller towns breed fewer jobs, especially at the director level and above. Whats more, people who have those jobs dont tend to leave them, according to Rosemary Polczynski, who lives in a small town in rural upstate New York.To up the ante, she recently completed an MBA program. But it took a third feier to graduate her mid-level resume to her new rank in society.A Band-Aid fixAfter she finished her masters degree this spring, Polczynski simply added her latest school information to her old resume a document that went back at least 12 years and hadnt been updated in any major way. After a month of circulating her old resume without responses, she ventured down to her undergraduate college and met with a job counselor who told her that her resume welches perfect and needed no changes or updat es.Polczynski was skeptical, however when she joined Ladders, she decided to try out the companys free resume critique. It was respectful, but it was also blunt and extremely honest about why it was so poorly done and outdated, Polczynski said. My old resume wasnt telling anyone what I was really talented at in my career. After working with 20-year career coach and certified professional resume writer Gary Nelson, Polczynski saw how to put her new absatzwirtschaft knowhow to work. Its funny how I have been marketing products and services in my career, but I didnt realize I needed to be marketing myself in my resume, Polczynski said.Polczynskis old resume was a typical grocery list of titles, dates and descriptions. It included a few accomplishments but nothing that stood out visually or thematically, Nelson stressed. What did she do? What did she want to do? Nelson asked. Recruiters and I would know, as I used to be one want documents that are easy to navigate and easy to scan either in a machine or with their eyes. Rosemarys needed a full makeover. After receiving Polczynskis detailed worksheet and having a conversation with her about her immediate and long-term career goals, Nelson got to work. With new information in hand, he bolstered Polczynskis profile, emphasizing her new MBA and a summary of her distinct marketing, public relations and communications skills. He also added a structured core competencies list with key industry words. In addition, Nelson reorganized her work-experience section by spelling out the results shed achieved.Putting a face with a nameNelson also focused the document Polczynskis personal strengths in the workplace.Shes a giver and strong diplomat, Nelson said. Her character is important to her, and I wanted to make sure it came across in the resume.I love everything about this new resume, Polczynski said. Its impactful, and it describes me and who I am at the job to a tee. It captures my strengths as a worker and as a person.Im rea lly comfortable with this document, she said. There are no more question marks or concerns anymore. I have something really strong I can use and tweak as needed.

6 things the happiest families all have in common
6 things the happiest families all have in common6 things the happiest families all have in commonFamily life is hectic. Most of us play it by ear and hope it works out well. Or maybe you havent started a family yet but when you do you want to do it right. Arent there some legit answers out there about what creates the happiest families? Yes, there are.To get the facts I called Bruce Feiler, author of the New York Times bestseller, The Secrets of Happy Families. When writing his book, Bruce knew there were answers already out there - but not necessarily where wed expect. He found solutions to common family problems in business theory, Harvard negotiation techniques, and even by talking to Green Berets.Below youll learnThe 1 predictor of yur childs emotional well-being.The 1 predictor of their academic achievement - and behavior problems. And the simple thing that steers kids away from drugs, toward better grades and even improves their self-esteem. And mora.Heres what makes strong, ha ppy families1) Create a family mission statementI asked Bruce what he would recommend if he could only give one piece of advice. He said Set aside time to talk about what it means to be a parte of your family.Ask What are your family values? In business-speak Develop a mission statement for your family.Heres BruceInitiate a conversation about what it means to be a part of your family. Sit down with them and say Okay, these are our ten central values. This is the family we want to be. We ended up printing it and it hangs now in our dining room.Does defining values seem too big and intimidating? Its really nothing mora than setting goals.Heres BruceDid we do every one of those things every day, every week, every month? No, thats not that point. But the point is, when it goes wrong, you hav e that goal out there. We want to be a family that has fun together. Have we made time to play recently? No, we dont. So lets make time to play. Lets go bowling or hiking or roller skating. You have goals at work. You have personal goals. Why wouldnt you have goals as a family?(For mora on the science of happy families, click here.)So you and your family discussed your values and came up with a mission statement. What other thing did Bruce say was vital?Like the mission statement, its another story. But its not about the future - its about the past.2) Share your family historyResearch shows whether a kid knows their family history was the number one predictor of a childs emotional well-being.Heres Bruce researchers at Emory did this study that showed that the kids who know mora about their family history had a greater belief that they could control their world and a higher degree of self-confidence. It was the number one predictor of a childs emotional well-being.And research confir ms that meaning in life is all about the stories we tell ourselves. But heres whats really interesting recounting your family history is not just telling kids, Our family is awesome.Recounting the tough times, the challenges your family faced and overcame, is key.Heres BruceUnderstanding that people have natural ups and downs allows kids to know that they too will have ups and downs. It gives them the confidence to believe that they can push through them. It gives them role models that show your familys values in practice.(For more on how to make your kids smarter, click here.)Mission statements, family history thats a lot of talking. When is all this supposed to happen? Whenever you get around to it? No way.3) Hold weekly family meetingsYoure not mom or dad anymore - youre now co-CEOs. To find the way to keep a family improving Bruce turned to the world of business.Your family needs a weekly mainboard meeting with all the shareholders present. Sound cold and clinical? Wrong.Bruces wife says its one of the best things theyve done to make their own family life happier. Its not complicated and it only takes 20 minutes, once a week.Heres BruceWe basically ask three questions. What worked well this week, what didnt work well this week and what will we agree to work on in the week ahead? And if the kids meet the goal, they get to help spielblttchen a reward. And if they dont, they get to help pick a punishment. They dont do it without us, but we all do it in consultation.Bruce did a TED talk explaining in detail how techniques from the business world, like meetings, can improve our families(For more on how to raise happy kids, click here.)So your family has a mission, a shared history and youre meeting regularly. This is great because everyone is talking, which is crucial. But what inevitably comes with talking a lot? Arguing. Its normal and natural and thats okay. But you have to have rules so it isnt a path to hurt feelings and homicide investigations. Whats the pro per way to argue?4) How to fight rightBruce wanted to find the best way to resolve disputes - so he didnt turn to books about families, he turned to a pro.Bill Ury is co-founder of the Project on Negotiation at Harvard Law School and co-author of the classic, Getting To Yes,What can one of the best negotiators teach families about resolving those inevitable everyday squabbles of life?Bruce outlines three key stepsNumber one, Separate everybody. In negotiation speak this is Go to the balcony. Take a moment where you look back on the fight as if it were on a stage and youre on the balcony and say Okay, whats really going on here? This reduces emotions like anger.Second, we ask our kids to come up with three alternatives. In negotiation speak this is Expand the pie before you divide the pie.Bruce admits this part can be tricky. But you need to make it clear nobody is leaving the table until there are three options. The third stage is Bring people back together. In negotiation speak thi s is Build the golden bridge of the future.Have the kids pick one of the three that they like best. Whats key is that the children created the alternatives and agreed on the best solution. As Bruce explains in his book, when kids get a say, it works out better for everyone. Dont be a dictator unless you have to.(To learn how you can resolve conflict with lessons from FBI hostage negotiators, click here.)So mission statements, family meetings and fighting right are great - but what keeps a family together day to day?5) Have family dinner together any time of the dayResearch shows having dinner as a family makes a huge difference in childrens lives. As Bruce writes in his book, The Secrets of Happy FamiliesA recent wave of research shows that children who eat dinner with their families are less likely to drink, smoke, do drugs, get pregnant, commit suicide, and develop eating disorders. Additional research found that children who enjoy family meals have larger vocabularies, better man ners, healthier diets, and higher self-esteem. The most comprehensive survey done on this topic, a University of Michigan report that examined how American children spent their time between 1981 and 1997, discovered that the amount of time children spent eating meals at home was the single biggest predictor of better academic achievement and fewer behavioral problems. Mealtime was more influential than time spent in school, studying, attending religious services, or playing sports.I know what many of you are thinking Our schedules are crazy. Its too hard to get everyone together. We cant do it every night. And thats 100% okay. Dinner isnt the important part. All that matters is that time together, whenever it is.And it doesnt even have to be that much time. How much real conversation happens at family dinner? 10 minutes. As Bruce likes to say, the rest of the talking is Take your elbows off the table and Please pass the ketchup.Whats the best way to make use of those 10 minutes? Heres BruceSo number one, the first big thing to be aware of is that parents do two-thirds of the talking in that ten minutes. And thats a problem. So your first goal should be to flip that and let the kids do more of the talking. So that would be issue number one.Number two, I would say a great thing to do in that ten minutes is to try to teach your kid a new word every day. Theres a tremendous amount of evidence out there that one of the biggest determinants of success in school has to do with the size of vocabulary.(For more research-based parenting techniques, click here.)Mission statements, family history, meetings, fighting right, dinners Thats a lot to do. Heck, its a lot to just remember.Whats Bruces recommendation to the family thats already strapped for time? What overarching theme can we see in all of these tips?6) Just tryAsk anyone if they want to make their family happier and, of course, theyll say yes. Then ask how many hours theyve actively invested in that goal over the p ast month. Im guessing the reply is going to be Ummmmm Reading about improving your family is only the first step. Well, no.If we work with our families and take small steps to try and make them better, we actually can make our families happier. And in the process, we can make every member of our family happier. So whats the secret to a happy family? New study finds moderate carb diet is healthy
New study finds moderate carb diet is healthy New study finds moderate carb diet is healthy We are constantly told that carbs are the enemies. We blame them for making us gain weight, giving us headaches, acne, etc., Heck, Iâm pretty sure we are blaming carbs for Game of Thrones ending next year. But at the same time we love them because letâs face it. Bread tastes so much better than a carrot. Well you will be happy to hear that a new study finds that if you have been trying to stick to a low carb diet, you should add a few pieces of bread to it.Diets where you either get less than 40% of your energy from carbs or more than 70% of your energy or calories from carbs was associated with the greatest risk of death. So if you fall in between that range you have a healthy diet, according to this study published on Thursday. They looked at 15,428 adults ages 45â"64 years in four different communities in the U.S. between 1987 and 1989.A moderate carb diet is the way to goIt was found that those annoying people who donât eat bread because they are on a low-carb diet and mostly stick to protein and fats from animals, have a higher risk of mortality. Yes, these diets are effective for losing weight fast but they can have long-term negative ramifications. Of course, this isnât saying that a high-carb diet is healthy either. The researchers estimated that people who had a moderate carb diet at age 50 had a life expectancy of around 83-years-old, while for high-carb eaters it was 82 and it was 79 for low-carb people.Other studies suggest that if you want to cut back on carbs, try replacing them with beans, nuts and seeds instead of just meats and cheeses. But also, treat yourself to a donut for breakfast once in a while!

Legal Secretary Salary Negotiating Tips
Legal Secretary Salary Negotiating Tips Legal Secretary Salary Negotiating Tips If you're a legal secretary, your job prospects are looking better these days than they did a few years ago. Law firms are hiring to keep up with increased client demand for legal services, and corporate legal departments are growing in order to handle more legal matters in-house. These and other factors can be good news, too, for todayâs legal secretary salary. Much like your career possibilities, the role of a legal secretary has evolved. While these professionals may still perform some traditional duties, like answering phones, they are expected to perform high-value activities involving law office procedures, technology and legal terminology. In many firms and corporate legal departments, legal support duties and responsibilities have expanded to include researching and compiling data for court cases, along with tasks like filing documents, communicating with clients and managing attorney schedules. So when you do get that legal secretary job offer, it's important to make sure you're getting what you're worth. Before entering salary negotiations, review the following key factors that come into play when a law firm or corporate legal department determines a legal secretary salary. Experience counts in this field What salary can you expect in a legal secretary job? According to the 2019 Robert Half Legal Salary Guide, a legal secretary with one or two years of experience can earn a midpoint starting salary of $40,750. With three to six years of work history, a legal secretary can expect $52,000 as a midpoint salary. Because salaries can differ significantly depending on the city, use our Salary Calculator to find out what a legal secretary can make in your area. Also notice how the numbers increase with years on the job. A legal secretary salary for a professional with seven to 11 years of work experience can make $60,500 at the midpoint, and a senior or executive legal secretary with a dozen or more years can expect $67,750. At the midpoint, candidates have average experience with the necessary skills to meet the job requirements. Trying to find the right job seeker for your open legal secretary role? We can help with that too. Learn how. START HIRING TODAY Your skills and areas of expertise The most in-demand legal support professionals have several years of experience combined with strong technology skills. Law firms desire candidates who have backgrounds in hot practice areas such as intellectual property, compliance, commercial real estate, and litigation or eDiscovery. Keep in mind that in some markets, hybrid or blended paralegal/legal secretary roles are becoming more common as organizations streamline legal support functions to improve efficiencies. Of course, strong interpersonal skills are essential for legal secretaries, and because so much client contact occurs through email, writing skills also are critical. Other desired traits include attention to detail, flexibility, resourcefulness and initiative. And in some markets, bilingual abilities - especially Spanish language skills - are increasingly vital. In terms of technical skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office is expected, as is expertise with document management software and other applications specific to a particular practice area or law firm. Typical duties of a legal secretary Communicate with attorneys, staff, clients and vendors, in person, on the phone or video conference, and by email. Attend and take notes at meetings, maintain files, and create, collect and format legal documents. Schedule meetings, depositions, inspections, hearings, closings. Perform research, prepare presentations and organize events. Complete administrative forms, such as time cards and expense reports. Ready to discuss your legal secretary salary? Once you've determined your value, you'll be in a better position to negotiate a salary that accurately reflects your worth. During discussions about your legal secretary salary, remember to be professional and keep your cool. Don't back down too easily, but stay open-minded about compromise. Also be clear on what you're willing to give up and what you can't do without - and remain optimistic. Then you and your potential employer are more likely to reach common ground, so you can end up with a result that makes both parties happy.

Microsoft Word Resume Templates Just Say No!
Microsoft Word Resume Templates Just Say No! Microsoft Word Resume Templates Just Say No! Please make this a New Years Resolution: I will not try to find a job by doing exactly what everyone else does, because I know that the result will be that I look just like everyone else. Microsoft Resume Templates Just Say No! According to Google, one of the most popular searches on resume writing is Microsoft Word Resume Templates. That means that literally millions of people typed into Google the equivalent of please help me to look like millions of other people. Theres a recipe for success! Maybe people look for resume templates because of a lack of confidence. (Im not sure how a resume is supposed to look, so this will at least mean I look professional). But think about the recipient for a minute. Think about the jaded HR rep or head hunter or line manager who sees hundreds of resumes for every vacancy and who has seen thousands of resumes just like yours over the years. At best, she wont really notice you. At worst shell think youre either lazy or unimaginative or both. And heres another problem those templates are so out of date. I dont know what year they were first created maybe 1927? They just scream I am old-fashioned. And the third problem? Starting with a resume template and then trying to shoehorn your own story in is exactly backwards. The right way to create an effective resume is to start with your story. Decide what you want to say. Decide what your audience wants to hear. Then create a resume structure that helps to communicate that message. Dont get caught up in rules or standards. Just ask yourself: what is the message I need to communicate to the people who make hiring decisions? Then let that determine what your resume looks like. Your own design will always be more eye-catching than something created up by a Microsoft engineer who drew the short straw on assignments. So, please trust yourself and step away from the Microsoft Word resume templates.

Researcher Focus Emerging Technology
Researcher Focus Emerging Technology Researcher Focus Emerging Technology Researcher Focus: Emerging Technology Interview conducted by Paul Glanville Professor Yonas Tadesse from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas talks about Energy Harvesting from Human Motion > Learn more about this research through the 2013 ASME Congress Proceedings: Rotary Multimodal Energy Harvesting Device. Energy harvesting is a hot topic right now, with the explosion of internet-enabled technology beyond the traditional computing hardware we have a lot more gadgets requiring power than we used to. Whether it is the soon-to-be released Apple Watch as a flashy example of wearable technology or remote sensors monitoring our buildings and infrastructure, a constant challenge to extending the web of our internet of things is keeping these devices powered that are often out of reach from our electricity grid. Energy harvesting, generating power at or near the point of use for these devices, is the solution to this problem using available resources: light, temperature or pressure gradients, or in the case of research from UT-Dallas, human motion. In this interview, Professor Yonas Tadesse describes how his team investigated a method of generating power from the linear motion of our arms and legs, in the hope that this rotary multimodal energy harvesting device can serve our power-hungry gadg ets. How did you initially get into your research concerning energy harvesting technologies and their integration with human motion? Initially, my graduate advisor was the one who inspired me to pursue in this research area. I was a graduate student at the Center for Intelligent Material Systems and Structures (CIMSS) at Virginia Tech where extensive researches are carried out, and I continued doing the research by integrating with various systems at UT Dallas. Your research has both experimental and analytical results. How challenging was it to validate one set of results with the other? The most interesting part of the study was the design of the energy harvesting system. It combines two transduction mechanisms in one system, and requires initial oscillation to continuously generate power from a vibrating source. We realized that some of the modeling didnt account for the practical scenario as a result, we made some design changes. Usually modelling ignores some of the practical aspect and may provide slightly different results particularly for interrelated systems. What work remains before you complete this RD program? We need to study the parametric relationship. For example, what happens if the size of our device is reduced to 100mm, 50mm and MEMS scale? This is what we are investigating right now, both theoretically and experimentally. There are several researches that need to be done on this area especially in the design, manufacturing, modeling, testing and integration. I would like to mention that we are using the rapid prototyping (3D printing) technology to fabricate our prototype. This makes our progress faster. What other applications of energy harvesting interest you? I am also interested in energy harvesting from ocean waves, solar, energy harvesting from microorganisms such as bacteria and algae. 7 Tips for the Morning of Your Interview
7 Tips for the Morning of Your Interview 7 Tips for the Morning of Your Interview 7 Tips for the Morning of Your Interview Interviewing can be stressful these job interview tips can help you set yourself up for success. [TWEET] No matter how much time and effort you've invested in learning how to prepare for an interview, pre-game jitters can happen to the most qualified and prepared candidates. A little excitement can keep you present, paying attention, and on your toes but too much anxiety can throw off your performance. If you come across as stiff, awkward, and rushed, your technical qualifications won't save the day. There are a few simple job interview tips you can follow ahead of time that can set you up for a win. Some of these may seem basic. However, don't discount the value of a good checklist when your mind is going in 12 different directions! Build these seven steps into your routine, and you will be walking into the company office confident, fresh, and sharp. 1. Prepare your clothes in advance of the interview. A day or two ahead of time, get your interview suit out into good light and have a close look. Is the suit pressed and clean? Does it have any missing buttons or hanging threads? If you have not worn it in a month or two, try it on to make sure it fits you well. Choose everything else you will need to get ready down to socks, shoes, shirt, and tie or any other accessories. While that level of preparation may seem excessive, reducing the number of decisions you have to make on the big morning can free up your brain's processing power. It also eliminates last minute surprises you don't want to discover a dried-up coffee stain on the shirt you were planning to wear 10 minutes before you head out the door. 2. Have a travel plan and check your timing. This job interview tip is crucial: check driving or commute time to the interview location. Add a buffer for the unexpected an extra half hour can save the day if you take a wrong turn, get off at the wrong stop, or run into unexpected traffic. If you are driving, consider filling up the tank the day before to eliminate the need for extra stops on the morning of the interview. I recommend getting to the office 15 minutes early. You can use the extra quiet time for a last-minute review of your notes, listening to music, or meditation. I do not recommend walking into the reception area more than 5 minutes early the hiring manager may feel obliged to interrupt his or her workflow to greet you, creating a rushed opening to the interview. 3. Pull your paperwork together. Create a binder or a folio that will hold everything you might need during the interview. Include extra copies of your resume, a notepad, and a pen. You may also take a list of questions you want to ask during the interview, and the names of the individuals you will be meeting with. I also find it helpful to have the office phone number with you, just in case. On the subject of being prepared, I recommend putting together a small care package with tissues, stain remover, pain relief medicine, mints, and a bottle of water. For my own kit, I have been known to include some emergency dark chocolate. Keep the care package in your car or in your briefcase, and a headache or a coffee spill will have no chance of derailing your morning. 4. Eat something light and drink water. If your nerves get the better of you, food may be the last thing on your mind. No matter what, eat a light breakfast you will need your blood sugar to be at its best during the interview. Just as an elite athlete pays attention to nutrition and hydration on competition day, so should you. Drink water, and choose a balanced meal or snack (carbs, fats, and protein combined create longer-lasting energy). Don't overdo it with caffeine you want to appear relaxed and at ease, not jittery. 5. Center yourself. No matter how busy you are focusing on how to prepare for the interview, find a few quiet minutes to center and ground yourself. Close your eyes. Focus on your breathing. Visualize walking into the interview confidently. If you are feeling the butterflies, make a conscious decision to interpret the physical sensation as excitement, not anxiety. My favorite trick is to focus on the sensation of my feet touching the ground. 6. Get some fresh air. If weather and circumstances allow, spend a few minutes outside. Fresh air and sunshine can offer a great boost of energy! If it is too hot or humid outside try blasting some air-conditioned air in your face before you step out of the car. 7. Final visual check and cell phone off! Make the most out of the last minute bathroom stop on your way to the reception. Check your reflection for any stray pieces of food, loose threads, or lint. This is also a great moment to practice smiling! Next, turn off your cellphone (or put it in airplane mode). I do not recommend taking a shortcut here by putting the phone on vibrate everyone can hear the buzzing in your bag, and the distraction value is the same as if it was ringing. In addition to eliminating the noise distractions, a phone in airplane mode delivers one more benefit: you will be less tempted to bury your head in social media while you wait. Most candidates don't realize that immersing themselves in a distraction (book or phone) causes them to appear surprised and startled when the hiring manager walks in. You want to look poised and ready. Instead of scrolling through online feeds, use the time to create a positive first impression with the receptionist, and take in the office for any early clues about the culture of the company. In closing, I offer this job interview tip from competitive athletes and martial artists: Your interview starts the moment you walk or drive in. Do not wait until the first interview question to turn on your game. You do not know who may be walking through the reception area, sharing your elevator ride, and parking next to you, so treat every person you come across as a potential decision maker. This is your time on the ground be present and alert. Finally, go into the interview with a sincere desire to be of service to the company. Remember to relax and breathe. It's easy to attribute super-human powers to the person who holds the hiring decision in his hands. Keep in mind that the hiring manager has good and bad days, a life outside of work, and a personality. Focus on making a human connection, and have a great conversation. If Job Seekers Can Be Flexible, Why Cant Employers
If Job Seekers Can Be Flexible, Why Can't Employers If Job Seekers Can Be Flexible, Why Can't Employers? If Job Seekers Can Be Flexible, Why Can't Employers Here's a good discussion launcher: If workers need to be flexible in their jobs and when they get laid off and look for new jobs, why can't employers show similar flexibility when they need to fill a position or hang onto someone who might look for something better after, say, a year? I pondered that question after I read a recent CNNMoney.com article about job postings that say unemployed applicants would not be considered. Yes, when you're jobless and sending dozens of resumes, most of which fail to land interviews, it sometimes seems as if no one will cut you a break. And then you see this tactless statement in a job posting that drives home the point rather bluntly. That's like saying: So, your old company kicked you into the gutter? Tsk! Tsk! Here's another kick! Stay in that gutter and like it! What are some of the lame excuses companies hide behind in rejecting the jobless? The article cites these two gems: If you're unemployed, there must have been something wrong with your performance. I can hear the chorus of What?!?!? among those who were pink-slipped because of their company's performance problems, not their own. In this economy, employers get too many applications, so they have to find some shortcuts to end up with a more manageable list. Hmmm, how about eliminating resumes from anyone with the letter K, L, M, N, or O in their last names? That makes about as much sense. But here's another reason, which was not cited in the article, that we hear a lot today: The job would be a lateral move or a step down, so if they hire an unemployed candidate, he or she will bolt after the economy improves and something better comes along. Some will find that logical, but I believe it signals a company's inflexibility. If an employer winds up with a star performer who has taken a step down after being laid off from a previous job, wouldn't it make sense to find a way to keep that person? Or, if a highly experienced person applies for a lower-level job, and the company knows it can benefit from the job seeker's experience, why not tinker with the job requirements to move them closer to that level of expertise? That's how an employer can be more flexible, and more of them should be in this economy.
